ABOUT

Nestled at the foot of Mount Psiloritis in the village of Axos, Mylopotamos, the Museum of Wood Sculpture offers a captivating experience for lovers of art and tradition. This permanent collection showcases the incredible craftsmanship of local sculptor Giorgos Koutantos. The museum doubles as both a gallery and a working studio, giving visitors the chance to witness the artistry in real-time.

Over a hundred sculptures, all hand-carved with nothing more than a hammer and chisel, are on display. These impressive works are life-sized or larger, depicting a range of themes, from folklore and daily life in Crete to nature, religion, and mythology.

Some standout pieces include:

  • Folklore figures such as "The Lyre Player," "The Cretan," and "The Grandparents."
  • Scenes from nature, like "The Eagle and the Serpent" and "The Kri-Kri."
  • Religious depictions such as "Saint George of Diskouri" and "The Dance of Isaiah."
  • Mythological figures like "The Little Mermaid."

Each sculpture reflects the cultural, sociological, and historical heritage of Crete, offering a deep dive into the island’s identity. It's a space that invites visitors to explore the stories and traditions carved into each piece.
